Dr.Faustus Lights the Lights was my MFA Thesis project at Yale. I was very interested in exploring the theme of technology, which is very present within the play. To do this I decided to collaborate with AI to create some of the visuals and music present in the dance piece. I was interested in the way that the fragmented and imperfect nature of AI imagery mirrors the disjointed nature of Stein’s work. The imperfection present in AI created work is reminiscent of the small errors found within work created by humans. This error is sure to be eradicated at some point, but for now, I think that these errors create an interesting dialogue between human and machine created work, suggesting that humans and machines are closer to one another then they may seem.
